Havelberg, GERMANY
A small town that lies north west of Berlin. Part of the town is built on an island in the centre of the river Havel, a tributary of the Elbe. That mighty river runs just to the west of the town. If approaching from that direction a chain ferry carries you across the river, then a forest track brings you to Havelberg. There is a modern road running north to a mainline rail link, Berlin to Hamburg, just a few kilometres from the town, or south following the Elbe to the Hannover – Berlin motorway. Many of the roads leading off are cobbled or brick, dirt tracks in places but well worth exploring the attractive villages you come across. Complete faith in your sat-nav is required as you appear not to be heading anywhere at times.
Wildlife abounds in and around Havelberg, eagles, beavers, storks can be seen practically everywhere, a boat trip is highly recommended to see them in their natural habitats.
Another equestrian town, there is an annual horse fair drawing visitors from all parts. In 2015 a regional Garden Festival, the BUGA, was held in Havelberg and other close towns. A magnificent spectacle with the long term benefit of upgrading of infrastructure and refurbishment of run down areas, creating habitats for fauna and flora, recreational sites within the town.
Two top class hotels and several other good places to stay make the town a really pleasant place to visit, very relaxing, riverside walks, woodland walks, restaurants and bars.
