Verden, GERMANY
The town lies pretty well midway between Bremen and Hannover, beside, as the name suggests, the river Aller. The town is a mix of old and new buildings, a pedestrianised high street with cafes and shops, narrow streets and alleyways with old timber framed houses. Overlooking all is the Lutheran Dom or cathedral, a truly massive structure by any standards. Each year during May or June a carnival and week long street fair takes over the town. Called the Domweih, there is on offer food and drink, fairground rides for everyone.
Verden is renowned for horse racing, horse auctions and is thus also called the Reiterstadt, the rider’s town. A former garrison town the old barracks have been refurbished to cater for horses and riders attending the racing, auctions and equestrian shows.

A weekend jazz festival is held each year in the autumn with bands and musicians playing in many venues throughout the town.
An excellent centre for touring surrounding countryside with highly efficient rail links to the historic cities of Bremen and Hannover.
